When was the last time you looked closely at a flower? Did you wonder why it looks the way it does? Using nature journaling techniques, instructor Kate Righter will guide you in a fun afternoon of observing, drawing, and learning about the cultural and scientific aspects of local flowers. No experience necessary!
Class Details:
Time: 2:30 PM – 4:30 PM (Please arrive on time)
Ages: 12 and up (All participants must pay for a seat)
Workshop Outline:
Warm-Up Exercise: Students will start with a drawing exercise designed to connect your eye and hand and bring you into the present moment.
Drawing Techniques: Practice different approaches to drawing flowers, including contour, gesture, color mixing, and diagramming.
Expressive Drawing: With instructor guidance, combine approaches into an expressive drawing of a flower using colored pencils.
Hands-On Investigation: Engage in a playful hands-on investigation of the flowers, sharing knowledge and curiosity while documenting questions, observations, and learning with notes and quick sketches.
Materials Provided:
Plenty of paper (no need to worry about making mistakes)
An array of pencils, art pens, and high-quality colored pencils
Fresh flowers (note: they may differ from class photos depending on availability)
Investigative tools, such as magnifying glasses, rulers, and precision knives, to help closely examine the flowers
What to Bring:
Your curiosity and willingness to learn
